Oh Susanna is the self-titled follow-up to the brilliant Sleepy Little Sailor. While Sleepy Little Sailor never really amounted to much in the sales division, the critics loved it. I would think this would probably be the hardest place for an artist to be, between critical success and commercial success. Well, Suzie, if it makes you feel any better, Oh Susanna should be enough to take you to the other side. The album starts off with the sleepy track called "Unknown Land", where Suzie begs "Wake up, sleepyhead". Her true potential comes out on "Right By Your Side", the first single off of the album, with a raucous horn section and swaggery beat. Lucinda Williams would be jealous. "Mama" sounds like it could be coming from a jukebox in the middle of Louisiana. It's a perfect country ballad. Some of the tracks like "The Fall" tend to be sleepers and I'm not sure if I'll ever come around to that track. "Zoe", on the other hand, started out to be a sleeper but after a couple listens, the charm in the song was unleashed. The album ends off with another great, more upbeat track called "Carrie Lee". While Oh Susanna is not perfect, it shows that Suzie has enough under her belt to take on some of the other No Depression women.
