While I may have Jaga Jazzist classified as Electronica, they deserve to be in the Jazz category. The Stix showcases the 10 piece band in fine stereo sound. The album has already been nominated for a Norwegian Grammy as best album of 2002. Oh, I forgot to mention that Jaga Jazzist is from Norway. The band has been around in some form or another since 1994 and is more than capable when it comes to experimental instrumental music. The received rave reviews over their official debut, A Livingroom Hush, enough to warrant interest from cutting edge Ninja Tunes for The Stix release. The album consists of 10 tracks, all of about the same high caliber. There are horns and vibes that add to the mix, as well as many different sampling going on. From what I can tell though, most of the Stix is indeed live instrumentation in some form or another. It's hard to pick a favorite but "Suomi Finland" caught my ears as one of the best of the bunch. I found the Stix a very compelling and non-intrusive album to work to. If you are a computer worker, I would suggest this as background music as you hammer away on the keys. No lyrics to clutter up your head and the beats are subtle enough to keep your spirits high.
