Back in 2000 a band from Atlanta, GA caught my ears. It was this here band called Ashen. After releasing this very impressive album called No Other Comfort on Two Sheds the band seemingly disappeared. The bio that came with this EP seems to sum things up though. Original guitarist BJ Hale wanted out but continued to tour with the band until they found replacement Zac Carlson. Zac resumed the tour with the band and they found themselves with quite a buzz happening. Spring of 2002 caught them with a different dilemma, the band's vehicle was impaled by a drunk driver. All the band members miraculously survived but sustained enough injuries to prevent them from completing the follow-up album. They finally hit the studios earlier this year and set to work on Pull and Repel. Obviously shooken up, the band has decided that this will be it. This is their last album. After I was so impressed by No Other Comfort I came in with high expectations. And I guess when a band is finishing work on a band that they have already decided to hang up, it comes off a little uninspired. Pull and Repel has a lot of potential but it just seems like the band is going through the motions. "Priority One" is a great song but both the production as well as the musicianship is not quite up to the standards that they set on their last album. Ashen had something but it seems that that fateful night ended up with more than just physical injuries.
