This new movie featuring the sexy but ultimately annoying Gina Gershon is about a contemporary LA all-girl rock band. The whole premise behind the story (originally an autobiographical rock musical by Cheri Lovedog) is a group of aging girls decide to take one last crack at the life of a rock star. Actually, quite impressively Gershon takes on the lead vocal role for the band. She takes some cues from Linda Perry (who also helps out with the lead single "Stupidstar") from 4 Non-Blondes, working on a similar voice. I also hear a little of Chrissy Hynde's vocals in Gina. I'm more than positive that Hole and Courtney Love was a big influence on this whole thing. The songs are lacking hooks for attention but the musicianship is there. I would give Gina a 4/5 for her punk inspired vocals as well. A lot of the music was touched by Stephen Trask, the same guy who wrote most of the material from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The album should have had about 4 or 5 tracks pulled from it ("Sam" totally sucks). Obviously, Gina loved the rock thing and took these songs out on tour with the guys from Girls Against Boys backing her up on a 9 city tour. This soundtrack has got my interest up to actually sit down and watch the movie.
