Kid Koala is having some fun on this release. The album itself is fairly short, for a turntablist but Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs also includes a fairly lengthy comic book that he illustrated and laid out. It's a fun little story with very little words. The music on the album is over in a mere 35 minutes but while you are journeying through Eric San's (Kid Koala) creative mind, you are given lots to think about. For example, he leaves us with "Vacation Island", a scratchy track with a repetitive Hawaiian guitar providing most of the music and around the 2+ minute mark, the drums kick in. The album starts out with "Basin Street Blues" a track with very little rhythm happening on it. Kind of a drunk bluesy number. "Radio Nufonia" is one of the shorter tracks on the album but this is where Kid Koala's fun starts peeking out. My favorite track, though, is the dark and funky "Shanky Panky". It hits on levels you never knew about. Again, "More Dance Music" returns to the fun style that Kid Koala is known for. Some of My Best Friends isn't a groundbreaking album. Instead, Kid Koala is just providing a bit of a channel to get his comic into his fans hands. Fans will enjoy this but people just looking to get into Kid Koala might look to his previous release. It's a much more cohesive release.
