Now that Sarah McLachlan has released one of the most mediocre albums in the female singer/songwriter realm, people will be looking toward someone else for those heartfelt songs. I would suggest that people pay attention to Beth Waters to step up to the plate. Her self-titled album is actually her second album to hit my desk Her first, Over The Tide, was one of my favorites for quite sometime and I was just starting to forget about her when this one crossed my desk. The name immediately rang a bell and it hit my stereo immediately. This time around, while maintaining a bit of a Sarah style, she actually is reminding me a little more of Tori Amos. It might be the heavier prominence of piano that gets Tori popping in the head. One thing I had forgotten about was Beth's amazing voice. I can tell that a lot of thought went into the sequencing of songs on Beth Waters' CD. The album opens with one of the best songs (should be on the radio) called "Sweaters". It is a mix of emotion and power all wrapped up with her amazing vocal range. Then we get right into a bit of a mellow track called "Spun Sugar", a song that is a little more subdued. Even her mellow songs are capable of keeping interest with the fabulous piano playing. Her home of San Francisco must adore her. If you are in the area, be sure to check the listings and see if she is playing while you are there.
