40 Below Summer are from New Jersey and they have just been through the corporate ringer with their debut album. Invitation To The Dance was released in 2001, a powerful album produced by the infamous GGGarth Richardson on Sire/London. Shortly later that label disappeared in label mergers. So as a result Invitation To The Dance ended up without the proper support that it deserved. I never heard that album so I am jumping on board with their sophomore album and first indie album. Razor & Tie was kind enough to put out this album and it seems like it's going to be a winner. 40 Below Summer is a five piece that likes to mix heavy and melodic into their brand of hard rock/metal. On Mourning After they chose to go with David Bendeth (Vertical Horizon) to get a little more radio friendly polish on their album and it seems to have done the job. Tracks like "Monday Song" would be a welcome addition to radio rotation. When a band can follow up a song like "Monday Song" with an aggressive foray like "F.E." you know they have depth. 40 Below Summer may not be at their prime yet but they do show so much potential. A lot more than a lot of major label metal bands right now. The opening track, "Self Medicate" is a rocking track that has been chosen to be on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre soundtrack. I think that 40 Below Summer have a great future and their perseverance should prove to be a asset for them. Good vocals and different songwriting makes for interesting music.
