Sam Beam, the man behind Iron and Wine is quite likely going to knock past crooners like Nick Drake off of their pedestal. You see, Iron and Wine were scooped up by Sub Pop last year without much more than hearing two full-length demos that Sam had created. They trimmed down those tracks to the brilliant The Creek Drank The Cradle and critics just loved it. Lo-fi bedroom rock has a new spokesman. Now, not even a year later, Sub Pop and Sam have another 5 songs for us in the form of The Sea and the Rhythm. I've heard comparisons between Iron & Wine and Beck. The comparisons fit for albums such as Beck's latest Sea Change. Sam's vocals are as simple and exciting as Beck but Beam's music is even more gentle. For example, "Jesus The Mexican Boy" is held together by mere threads. "The Night Descending" reminds me of something that Gillian Welch would. It's got a bit of that Appalachian feel to it. The title track is another highlight. There are only 5 tracks on this EP but it should be enough to tide over people that loved his debut. Not a bad song on The Sea and the Rhythm.
