Stars is a very interesting band and Heart, just as interesting an album. I caught one of my favorite live shows here in Calgary with the Stars being on the bill. It was an Arts & Crafts tour that Amy Millan had more than just her regular Stars role. She filled in in each of the other two acts including the amazing Broken Social Scene and did an amazing job. It was after that show that I actually heard this album for the first time. Heart starts out with "What The Snowman Learned About Love", a very psychedelic but pop flavored track that leads the listener to question what he/she is about to embark on. Then as soon as the guitars start chiming in on "Elevator Love Letter" and Amy's vocals reach in and grab you own very heart you start to think of Stars as a bit of a different band. Then, on the title track, the first to feature the full capabilities of Torquil Campbell, you start to realize that you really have no idea what you are in for. And, as most cases prove, Stars is much more energetic in a live setting. Heart is quite a mellow album, albeit very impressive and lush, but with their live show, you pretty much have Torquil jumping down your throat. He is a very intense individual but on album, he tends to be a little more reserved. Stars have proven to me that they are more than what meets the eye in both a live and album setting. Heart is a very impressive album with complex songs like "Look Up" that have a lot going on in them. Stars have a bright future. Watch for them playing live in your area. Both Torquil and Amy provide ample proof that the male/female vocals are worthy.
