I had the hardest time thinking about this review. If you are reading this, you are most likely aware that the Fire Theft is basically Sunny Day Real Estate, in members anyway. Jeremy is still leading the band and he has taken all but one with him from the Sunny Day camp. So this is the next reincarnation of the band? No, actually the guys have completely reinvented themselves, hence the name change. They have moved pretty much completely away from the genre they more or less invented (emo) and have moved into a prog-rock territory. Lift up your jaw because this shit is actually impressing me. I had to listen to it over and over, and then start all over again. I think when you reinvent a sound but maintain all the same band members, people have expectations and that's where a lot of critics had problems with Fire Theft. Flip this album into your changer and you will most likely leave it there for weeks to come. The album starts out with a great track called "Uncle Mountain" that builds nicely and gives SDRE fans an idea of where Enigk and his crew are heading with this album. Is that a string section in there? I don't know but Jeremy sounds completely invigorated. There's a lot of interludes that really seem to compliment the album. I can't get over "Chain". The start of it sounds like an old Yes or maybe even Genesis album. "Houses" is one of the most SDRE sounding tracks but it is still a far reach. I'm not sure if this album will stand the test of time but it's good to see that these talented musicians are moving forward instead of living in the past.
