Jackpot - Shiny Things
I had heard many good things about the band known as Jackpot but unfortunately Shiny Things is not an easily accessed album. I tried special ordering it at a couple of music stores but could track it down. After ordering it online I have been able to enjoy this very interesting album. Jackpot is largely Rusty Miller's vehicle for getting his songs out and if Shiny Things is any indication his songs are on par. Tracks such as "Bring On The Chimes" show that it should be Rusty in the limelight instead of Ryan Adams for Americana poster-child. The album's charms start to shine through after a couple listens and you begin to find gems like the raunchy "Fleas On The Tail Of Time" and pop perfect "Pennies". It is apparent after repeated listens that Jackpot is more than your average No Depression band. Rusty's song writing incorporates elements of pop and folk, and the band is able to inject so many cool harmonies like the gentle "Psycho Ballerina". Jackpot have no problem switching up between gentle ballads like "When You Leave" and raucous songs like "Tattoos". Track this album down (hint: the Insound link over on the side should suffice).
