Nikhil takes its name from the lead singer, Nikhil Korula. This band was newly formed in 2003 and has been playing sold out shows in Southern California. Their sound is that of the jam band genre. Nikhil tries to keep a groove going in their music that has a fairly organic sound. "When I Look In Her Eyes" seems like it could easily be a Dave Matthews throwaway song. It utilizes the horn and has a laid back feel to it. In fact, horns play a big part in Nikhil's sound. Evan Francis and Dan Boissy supply the sax sounds while Jack Lees (percussion), Ethan Phillips (bass), Anthony King (guitar) and Lorca Hart (drums) round out the Nikhil band. Korula takes on all vocal duties as well as acoustic guitars. The band uses influences as diverse as jam bands, calypso, reggae, rock and funk to create some quite interesting songs. The album opener ("Love Will Make Your Day") has a strong Calypso flavor to it and it works to the bands advantage. I can see why people go see Nikhil live. This would be fun music to dance too. I expect to see this band become much more confident in their next few releases. They are a little inexperienced but playing live as much as they do will surely lend itself to experience.
