Meredith Byam and Melissa Gibbs went to an Elastica show in 1995 and were so inspired by it they decided to start up a band. It's taken the girls quite some time to get their debut together but with the release of Straight Out Of Lakeville they can put that task behind them. Without even getting much past the first track, "Hooked", the Elastica influence is readily apparent. And by the time I got to the halfway point it seemed as though Heavy Stud was more an Elastica tribute band than much else. Sure, Byam and Gibbs are good musicians but seem to be lacking originality. While Dawson's Creek may have adopted Heavy Stud with four of their songs being used on the series, it may be much harder to win over people with this replication of another fairly successful band. It may work though, seeing that Elastica's albums are coming out so infrequently, a fan may turn to a band like Heavy stud to fill in the gaps.
