Continuing with Dischord's re-release schedule, Shudder To Think gets the next treatment. This time it's their classic debut album for Sammich records that was initially released in 1989. It was the next year that Dischord scooped them up to release their next 3 albums. Now, I may not be the most informed person to review a classic Shudder To Think album because I have really only heard 50,000 B.C. and their First Love, Last Rites soundtrack. It's really interesting to see their roots though and see how strong an album that Curses, Spells, Voodoo, Mooses is. There are DC area influences in their music but Shudder To Think has always been different. There is a lot more melody to Shudder To Think than, say, Fugazi or Jawbox. I was actually expecting something much heavier but am quite happy with what I hear. On tracks like "Questionable" you can hear where Craig Wedren is heading with his vocals. He does have quite a unique voice but it's funny how much he reminds me of Ozzy on this album. Wedren voice is the defining element for Shudder To Think. It's what sets them apart from many of the Dischord crew. It's not very often I would recommend a reissue but this album really rocks.
