It didn't take long for Explosions In The Sky to take over many people's hearts. Their debut album was amazing and The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place is a great follow-up. Don't expect this album to cheer you up. In fact it would have been better if Explosions had left the "Not" out of the title. The 5 song titles aren't any brighter: the depressing "First Breath After Coma", the sad "The Only Moment We Were Alone", the dark "Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean", "Memorial" and the somewhat brighter "Your Hand In Mine". Not that the titles mean much, the songs are all complete instrumentals. They have learned a lot from the likes of Mogwai and Godspeed but have still managed to find their own sound in the mope-rock world. The songs are lengthy, with the shortest being still over 8 minutes, but once you get into it they start to blend together and there is hardly a differentiator between the songs. The group is able to go gently along and then blast you with a bolt of guitars. The thing I like the best about Explosions In The Sky is the chimey guitar sounds they get. "Your Hand In Mine" is indeed the brightest song on the album, showing that the guys are totally depressing.

This CD is completely inexhaustible. It sounds like one cohesive song full of beauty and volatile emotions which include euphoria, sadness, and yearning. The climatic "The Only Moment We Were Alone" is in my opinion the best explosions song ever made, but every song on this album is worth a listen. Let the titles give you an image of where the song is going, and let the song take you through your memories; you'll be surprised how powerful this stuff really is.

Whether they lift you up or drag you down, EITS are a band with fingers firmly on the pulse of the human emotional response to music. Without using any vocals, lyrics, and a bare minimum of instruments, they have the image of a garage band and somehow that works more for them than it would any other band in this widening genre of music. While others like GY!BE and Mogwai do less to strip down and more to add on, EITS has always been and will probably always be the opposite. Less is more, and there's a big dose of that ideal on "The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place". The album practically flows as one continuous track instead of the 5 it's broken into. There's a heavy feeling of drowning, of control being lost, throughout the melodies and arrangements. Tracks such as "The Only Moment We Were Alone" and "Your Hand In Mine" seem to represent a longing for a love once lost, or simply for love itself. The music rises, falls, rises and falls and never, ever becomes repetitive despite the singular nature the tracks take on. EITS are among the best at what they do, and this album is among the best of what they've done.
