It seems like the big beat generation may be on its last legs. Chemical Brothers releasing a greatest hits, Underworld doing the same, and we are still waiting for the next Prodigy album. Crystal Method was one of the bands responsible for the somewhat breakthrough of big beat and one of the few that are trying to keep it alive. Legion of Boom is actually disappointing. The album starts out with the mediocre "Starting Over". What were they thinking with "Born To Slow"? They are trying to be rock stars as well as be on top of the electronica sceneand former Kyuss singer John Garcia can't help out. Out of the entire album it was the only totally annoying song on Legion of Boom. Yeah, back in the day it would have been a decent big beat track, but in today's market you need to blow people away and tracks like this just don't do it. They then follow-up with the track "True Grit", a track that would befit any rave. The Crystal Method guys actually convinced Rhazel to perform on "American Way" but totally wasted his talents. The song is pathetic. One track that did impress me was "Weapons Of Mass Distortion". It's hard hitting on all fronts. Legion Of Boom is definitely not an essential album. Check it out if you are a fan but you have been warned. Check out the Lo Fidelity Allstars latest for your Big Beat fix.

Ok, so I've always been a mainstream fan until I started meditating. I had some underground fav's, Tongue Dried Sun, Parasite, Metalhead so I wasn't completely naieve. I spent some time enjoying gothic rock, country, metal, some emo (although my blog rant would lead other opinions...I consider myself well rounded music buff with who likes anything that sounds like it was put together, cohesive, and easy on the ears.
I often compare Inde to bottome shelf tequila, or to a Hewlett packard. You spend money on the albums and I often find I have just wasted my money. Few bands are able to catch that side of me. I am a very critial person. I was in the grocery store this afternoon litening to Pandora's Downtempo Manifesto Radio when Crystal Method's "Trip like I do came on" I was going to review this album called "vegas" because of this single song, it peaked my curiosity. Unfortunately ME didn't have it to review, so I chose Legion of Boom.
That said, at this point in time I'm listening to Legion of Boom. The songs are long, and very relaxing, and this album has so much to offer that I don't know where to start. I can tell you this, I have had to go to the bathroom urgently for the entire part of this album. #2, BAD, and I can't pull away from it.
Vegas was a better album by far, which is a shame because I would totally love to review that one. This album has great beats, oustanding production, their sound somewhat unique.Unlike the album "vegas" this album has vocal guests: Hannifa aka shay, Lisa from the Bellrays, Wes Borland, Jon Brion, and Rahzel.
I'm a little dissapointed because of the spoken word, and think it would have been better if William S Burroughs would have participated in the vocals, which would have made this electronica album very strange. I also like the song "True Grit", a song named after an American Hero: John Wayne.
Most of the time I listen to Techno/Electronica I can only stand about 20 minutes on it. Most of the songs on this album are in the 4-6 minute range and pretty upbeast, so I'm not sure I'd classify them as "downtempo".
Overall I think this album is worth buying, but I also say that Crystal Method did a spectacular job on "Vegas" and would encorage users to use resources first, you can find it at cd stores, itunes, whatever people are downloading from.
I give this album 7/10 because of the vocals. But for the .99 pricetag, pick it up and buy it.
But it for the beats and DJ work; they are out of this world. Buy it for the High and low frequencies. It is a very cohesive album that is refreshing from the others that I have reviewed. It's a keeper and now in rotation on my ipod.
