RecommendPutumayo releases are always solid albums. They have been around for a number of years, allowing people to experience music that they normally wouldn't get the opportunity to due to borders and the artist's music rarely getting out of the country they are from. Sahara Lounge is the latest in a slew of geographically centered releases. This one focuses on the middle east and places like Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Egypt as well as a few others. You may recognize the music on Sahara Lounge as that of bellydancing and other old world traditions. But the music here has another thing in common besides coming from the Middle East, it has elements of the western world music in it. You will hear samples and a few programmed beats throughout the album. You hear it right from the beginning on Sharif's gender bending "Shiraz". That sort of thing follows throughout the entire album, some influences more apparent than others. It is a great fit because this type of music is all about rhythm and programmed beats just work.
