The Safes - Family Jewels
The Safes are a family pop/punk band from Chicago that really know how to deliver the old-school goods. These guys rock out with a sneer and super-tight rhythm section. The songs aren't really all that original but it doesn't really matter because the Safes have the talent to pull it off and make all these songs sound fresh. Their mix is a little rockabilly on tracks like "F.D.J." and a lot of the classic Cheap Trick era straight ahead rock. There is even a track that sounds like it could be from the Beach Boys era, "Memory Lane". Nice harmonies on this ballad. You might feel inclined to lump The Safes into the garage rock revival thing that's going on but there is a lot more happening on Family Jewels than just a Hives feel. More melody and more rock than most albums today. I think in time The Safes should prevail, primarily because the just care about the music rather than the image.
