How dare someone steal the name of a Tragically Hip album! Nell Bryden's debut album is the first for New York indie 157 Records. Bryden has released a couple of EPs previously but this is the first full-length album under her belt. Day For Night opens with the sprawling "Daylight", an appropriate introduction to Nell. Her vocals are stronger than that of a lot of female vocalists that I have been reviewing lately. The production work really works too (Fred Mollin). "Red" takes the album in a little bit of a darker place with a minor key track. It moves into a brighter chorus reminding me a little bit of an 80s theme. On "Disappear" we get one of Bryden's only real slackers. This song doesn't do much to enhance the album. There was one song in particular that sounded a little too much like U2. On "White Rose" you can literally sing along with the lyrics from "One Tree Hill". I'm not sure if this was intentional but it still works out alright with the female vocals. Oh, and Nell, bonus tracks are sooo 1990's. Just list a 12th track and we'll all be happy instead of having to wait for the 11th song to finish. Nice debut though. We should be seeing Nell around, next time on a major label.
