This is a very interesting release from an artist known as Phideaux Xavier. To start with, he is giving away his disc to anyone who wants it, both CDs and digital downloads. Also, he encourages you to burn copies for your friends. You don't hear about that everyday. And when that happens, you get up your guard for some god-awful music that nobody would want to pay for anyway. Well, luckily Fiendish is not god-awful. It's actually a very decent album for a self-released effort. The production is crisp and very intricate, and that's coming from listening to the album on a very nice set of headphones. Phideaux's music kind of fits into the prog rock category, sort of. He also incorporates many elements of folk and rock in the music. Have a listen to "Headstones" and it could be a partner song for Kansas' "Dust In The Wind". Xavier calls his music spacey folk rock, which pretty much sums it up. The liner looks like an old Genesis or Yes album, with old sketchings and the lyrics laid out in recessed areas. He gets a lot of help from his friends on most of the songs. Fiendish is a well written album that is a different from the glut of rock out there right now. The entire album is listenable. Phideaux is doing it right. His music may not be for everyone but hey, it's free. Head over to his website to check it out for yourself.
