Mark Lanegan has made the jump from Sub Pop over to a just a much lauded label, Beggers Banquet. Here Comes That Weird Chill is the first output for Beggars and if it's any sign it is bound to be a fruitful relationship. He has plunked "band" on the end of his title giving us the image that he is moving towards something more than a solo project. It's more in the form of guest artists like Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri (both of Queens of the Stone Age), Greg Dulli (Twilight Singers, Afghan Whigs), Dean Ween, Alain Johannes, and Chris Goss (Masters of Reality). The songs have a broad variety to them with some songs sounding a little like Screaming Trees material and some like Lanegan's previous solo material but most of the songs are fresh and completely different. Have a listen to "Message To Mine" and you can hear the influence of Queens of the Stone Age here. "Clear Spot" is a bit of a psychedlic mind fuck (cover of Captain Beefheart track). "Methamphetamine Blues" is a twisted journey through noisy rock. And then on "Lexington Slow Down" I could imagine Tom Waits singing. It is one of my favorite tracks on Weird Chill. This is just a glimpse of what is coming on his forthcoming full-length for Beggars.
