I missed out on Beulah's last album, The Coast Is Never Clear but it wasn't for lack of trying. I had special ordered the CD twice and it never materialized. I was a little luckier with Yoko, Beulah's fourth full-length. It came a brief 4 months after I had ordered it. Thing's have changed quite a bit since When Your Heartstrings Break. I think the band was speculating on broken heartstrings previously and never actually had their hearts broken. This time around, Beulah seems much more sincere in their heartbroken songs. They have some new members this time around too but Miles Kurosky is still on vocals and sounding ever so sincere in his delivery. You know your in for something different when the album opens with a track like "A Man Like Me". It's almost like a confessional of sorts. The gentle intro into "Landslide Baby" is very interesting too. You can feel a build up coming but they hold it back just enough for anticipation to set in. Once you get into the track, it's a bit more than what the intro suggests. The song "Me and Jesus Don't Talk Anymore" is complete genius. It seems that the Beulah crew are looking more at the song as an adventure and stretch it out into a perfect piece. Yoko takes a couple listens to fully appreciate but it is indeed well worth the effort.
