Here's the deal; Ox is a project consisting of Mark Browning (principal songwriter/vocals/guitar/bass), Jesse Zubot (violin), Nathan Lawr (drums/piano), Sarah Craig (vocal/organ), and many others that fade in and out. Dust Bowl Revival is their debut album and for some reason, they couldn't find a label that was interested in them. So they decided to do it themselves. After listening to the album, there is absolutely no apparent reason why a indie or even major label wouldn't touch the band. Dust Bowl Revival is one of the cleanest, most well rounded folk/americana album that has emerged. It rivals fellow Vancouver band Radiogram who coincidentally produced this album. Ox starts off the album with the R.E.M meets Neil Young fun of "Transam" then they head off on the road with "La City", a great little traveling song. Then they hit on a Vic Chesnett styled gem called "Stolen Gem". Oh, and we are just on song three. Mark goes in and out from sounding like Neil Young, Vic Chesnutt, and Ryan Adams (among others). He is a great songwriter and even better vocalist. An interesting tactic was used on this supposed single album. If you put the CD into your CD-ROM drive you will get access to another full album. Check it out because there are some pretty decent songs here too.
