Americana, alt.country, folk-rock, No Depression - call it what you will but the fact of the matter is that this form of music has been around for what seems like an eternity. With a magazine taking the name from an Uncle Tupelo album of the same name sprouting in the wake, they now take time out of their busy schedule to let us know "What It Sounds Like". Dualtone and No Depression magazine have done a fine job at that with all sides of the spectrum being represented. We have the more rock oriented bands like Alejandro Escovedo ("Five Hearts Breaking") and Whiskeytown ("Faithless Street") and the rootsier side of things with Buddy Miller ("Does My Ring Burn Your Finger") and Johnny Cash ("The Time Of The Preacher"). Emmylou Harris has been seminal in this genre ever since she sang with Gram Parsons. She is represented here with a Hayseed track she sung back-up vocals for ("Farther Along"). Also on the compilation we have Neko Case, Doug Sahm, the original No Depression act The Carter Family, and Kevin Gordon with Lucinda Williams backing him up. While there are plenty of artists that aren't included here, this 13 song compilation does a great job in summing up a genre.
