One of electronica's greatest schizophrenics is back with another album as the name his mother gave him (I think), Luke Vibert. He is also sporting a new label. Warp has picked him up and I wouldn't be surprised if they have been trying for a while. Vibert is a perfect fit for their fucked up beats. YosepH is an album that looks heavily to the past while still trying to maintain an eye on the future. If you were back in 1989 YosepH is something you would have thought music in the year 2000 would sound like. But it seems funny that now in 2003 I scratch my head thinking that I've heard this all before. There is nothing organic about the music at all. It is entirely electronic based. Vibert manages to get his groove on with most of the songs with a futuristic funk style. It seems that the releases that come under the Vibert monicker are his more upbeat and friendly tracks. That does hold true with YosepH but he doesn't really show that he can keep up with some of the newcomers. There are a couple songs that have minor vocals in them like "Freaktimebaby" and "I Love Acid". The latter ends up grating on your nerves. For the most part, Luke Vibert's music is fairly upbeat but a little too generic for what we might consider futuristic music to sound like. The bleeps and samples are cleverly arranged but it just feels like there may be some elements missing.
