Plaid - Spokes
Plaid has been one of my favorite IDM groups since they broke away from their highly influential group Black Dog. Spokes is about their 4th full length album with a bunch of EPs integrated in their. It takes a bit of a different direction too. It's a gentle movement with fairly mellow songs like "B Born Droid" keeping the tempo subdued. Tracks like "Crumax Rins" actually build on what Plaid has done before. The overall feel to Spokes is a little more sunny than previous efforts. "Upona" is a fine example of where Plaid can go. They stretch things out and make completely electronic music sound almost organic. It's what I would imagine music of the future to sound like. The duo takes what people like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin do and make it accessible. The bleeps and samples never get in the way and they never feel abrasive. While Spokes is a very good album, it's not quite up to par for what Handly and Turner are capable of. Still very enjoyable though. I think Plaid personifies what futuristic music will sound like, today.
