Electrelane are an all-girl rock band from the coastal town of Brighton England. The Power Out is their sophomore album and their first for acclaimed British label Too Pure. Yeah, they get compared to Stereolab but there is a little more to the Electrelane girls than the French pop. Sure, they don't make it any easier with the French-sung lead track "Gone Under Sea" as well a few others. I am imagining more of Latitia singing for Tortoise or someone similar. Electrelane is too rock oriented to be directly compared with Stereolab. They also have a little bit of an identity crisis. There are times when I'm reminded of Sleater-Kinney and other times when it's more along the lines of the Breeders. "The Valleys" is an interesting track, sounding like an old gospel track with multiple arrangements. Doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album but fun just the same. The Power Out is not an extremely original album but it does have some great moments on it. If female rock bands are your thing then Electrelane may be for you.
