Loch Lomond is a new band that call both New York and Portland home. When We Were Mountains is their strange and brilliant debut album. Two of the members call Portland, OR home while the other two, Ritchie and Rob (who also play in The Standard), call New York, NY home. Although I'm not sure if they picked the right name for themselves, Loch Lomond do remind me slightly of Arab Strap, if Arab Strap could actually sing. In other words, imagine the beautiful soundscapes of that Scottish group and put in some sweet, melodic vocals in place of the one-too-many-pints voices. I also hear some similarities to The Folk Implosion. This is a good thing because the "New" Folk Implosion suck and we need someone to step up to the plate. When We Were Mountains grows on you with every listen and I found myself replaying the album at least 5 times before this review poured out. I didn't like it on first listen but by number 5 I was a Loch Lomond fan. This is a mellow and dark album so don't expect anything upbeat. It's a good album for working to, no distractions.
