Break the Silence is one of the newest members to the Hopeless roster of great punk bands. They come from the ashes of many of Chicago's finest punk bands: 88 Fingers Louie, SKG, All Else Fails, Mike and Every Light Red. With the release of Near Life Experience, I don't think that people will think of Chicago quite the same. It's a blistering hardcore album with many elements of melody thrown in to tease the listener. I think of it as an even heavier Bad Religion. When they are actually singing, they sound like BR, otherwise they are heavy as fuck. The music is intense and fast as hell. When the opening track, "At War With Instinct" hit me unsuspectingly then I knew I was in for a hardcore treat. I don't see any reason why Break The Silence should go as big as labelmates Thrice. They have the same sort of sound but Break The Silence just seems to have it all together. There may be a little more Epitaph/Fat Wreck sound in here but it's even more aggressive. I would definitely try and catch Break The Silence in a live setting. I'm thinking that they will rip fans heads off without trying that hard.
