I'll have to admit that I was a little scared when this Einstürzende Neubauten album hit my mailbox. When I was a record store clerk, there was a fellow employee who loved these guys but he was know for his absolutely horrid taste in eclectic music. I've also heard tales of their nihilistic performance in which they shower their fans with broken glass. So needless to say, I have never ventured inside a EN album. Perpetuum Mobile was actually a very pleasant surprise. Sure, it's totally fucked up in more than a few places but there are so many places where this album is completely listenable. The title track is very pleasant mixing the clattering of metal on metal with an almost crooner style vocal. It does go on for over 13 minutes but I actually enjoyed every minute of it. "Ozean und Brandung" is something more along the lines of what I was expecting. It is just a droning that goes on for 4 minutes, nothing of musical value here. But on "Youme & Meyou", they almost sound like Peter Gabriel. Seriously! It's a great track and something that almost warrants radio play. I know this isn't a good impression of what Einsturzende Neubauten is all about but I found it quite a fresh album in today's musical scene. This is a group that doesn't stick to conventional norms.
