It took me a couple listens to get into The Kite-Eating Tree's debut, Method: Fail, Repeat. I think the main reason behind my apprehension with the album was that front man Mike Hunter reminds me so much of Canadian 80s hair band Platinum Blonde. Oh, the music is very much different but Mike's voice does sound familiar. With that off my chest, Method: Fail, Repeat is probably one of the strongest Emo releases I have heard this year. Hunter has a tight band behind him and they are a bit different that the gamut of emo bands out there. The album opens up with one of the hardest tracks on the album "Softer Seems The Pavement". The band manages to evade the emo stereotype somewhat by trying to incorporate some post-hardcore into their music. A little angular DC rock is thrown in for good measure reminding me a little of Jawbox. Listening to "Through The Width Of A Straw". It almost sounds as if someone might have been a little bored with guitar lessons and they started noodling around with chromatic scales. It works and it's fun. "Lucifer Unemployed" is one of my favorite Kite-Eating Tree song. They also have some intelligent things to say rather than rely on relationships for the whole of their song catalog.
