The Coral's self-titled debut showed promise from this UK based sextet. I had a big problem with their scattered approach to the song compiling when it came to creating that album. It sounded more as if it was a archival compilation rather than a cohesive album. Now Magic and Medicine wasn't high on my list of albums to track down but I eventually got curious to see if they had changed anything. This album is beyond me expectations. The Coral still borrow heavily from music eras past but they do it in such a matter that their music sounds genuine and sincere. They have chosen to go with the more with the acoustic psychedelic side of things. The album starts out with a track called "In The Forest" complete with forest birds and crickets and what sounds like a hockey arena organ. It really sets the pace for what to expect on the rest of Magic and Medicine. The guys pick up a little steam on the next track, "Don't Think Your The First". I get a CCR vibe on "Talkin Gypsy Market Blues", a track that The Coral get trucking on.

These guys are big in Europe, and from their sound, it ain't hard to tell. They are truly talented, and express it with this diverse piece. There is something in there for everyone, and thankfully, The Coral strikes me as a band that just does what they feel, and it almost always comes out sounding good. Magic and Medicine does have a bit of Vaudeville appeal to the sound, but then on the other hand, they come off like The Eagles on other songs. The albums that follow this release are just as astonishing. Not everyone is going to like their albums as a whole, but there is going to be a song that gets stuck in your head, or some lyric that just hits your little sweet spot.
