Before I received To An Ambient Hollywood, I had never heard of Paul Duncan. He is a 23 year old musician based in Atlanta, GA by way of Texas. This is Paul's debut and it is very impressive and hard to classify. The album starts out with an instrumental called "1 in 22". It is probably the most obnoxious track on the album and even at that, it's not all that aggressive. Once he gets into things with "Ghost Of A Memory" you start to get a feel for how the rest of the album is going to work out. There is a funky drum line that keeps the beat while we are introduced to Duncan's mellow vocals. Then on "Film Life" Paul presents us with some intricate guitar work while some whacky samples are going on in the background. While To An Ambient Hollywood doesn't break any new genres open, it does showcase a very talented songwriter. Paul Duncan's work is gentle at the best of times but he is always able to keep the listener waiting for the next switch-up. Fans of Sam Prekop and Jim O'Rourke would really enjoy Duncan.
