The UK-based Cooper Temple Clause have been stirring up the accolades on the other side of the Atlantic. Now, with the release of Kick Up The Fire, and Let The Flames Break Loose we get to check out what all the fuss is about. This is basically their sophomore album, their debut being 2002's See This Through and Leave but their first to receive a push in North America. It's a powerful album that has a lot of similarities to Radiohead but quite a few added dimensions as well. The album is experimental in nature but maintains a fairly hard rock ethic while doing so. It's not unlike the group to pull off some interesting and spacey samples in the middle of a song. Some very well placed drum programming makes for a dynamic album. CTC is able to pull of quieter tracks like the slowly building "Music Box" that erupts into a cacophonous racket only to fall back a few notches. Some of the song arrangements are very sparse but it's not unlike the band to spaz out with the best of them. They utilize the epic style songwriting with many songs going over the 5 minute mark. Ben Gautrey has a very Brit-like voice that really suits the dynamics that his group is capable of. This album is a great introduction to a band that will see much more life and hopefully North America will embrace what they have to offer. They are one of the more interesting acts to come over from England.
