The Kates' are a band that come by way of San Francisco via Dundee UK and are out to reinvent punk. Fact of the matter is that Suicide Valentine is a stable release but it really offers nothing new in the way of punk music. It's clean an really accessible. The music is fun but again it doesn't push any boundaries. The EP opens up with the title track and keeps you bopping along to a fairly chunky guitar with some not so great production. The second track, "Student Bastards" is a little more lively with a fairly cool guitar intro even though it's not all that complicated. But the best song is the unexpecting last track, "Glam Queen". The Kates show promise but I think a little more live playing should solidify what they have to offer. Remember, this is nothing new so you really have to knock people over the head with skill when you are playing old school punk. Otherwise, you look like a joke.
