Pilate - Caught By The Window
Pilate was a band that was brought to my attention by a close friend. He found out my fond affection for Coldplay and stated that Canada's own Pilate rivals anything that Coldplay has produced. The verdict is still out on that but I am very impressed with Pilate's debut album. Songs are fairly mellow but soaring in the same breath. Caught By The Window starts out with almost a Pete Yorn style ballad called "Endgame" and then eases into the more uptempo "Melt Into The Walls", almost a Bends era Radiohead song. Then the tempo really kicks in with the track "Into Your Hideout", probably my favorite track on Caught By The Window. The guys bring it down again for the gentle "Mercy". Todd's vocals really shine on this track. And then they hit on a perfect ballad called "Fall Down". With Todd being the band's founder, he has sure gathered up an impressive group of musicians. There are some tracks like "Don't Waste Your Breathe" that are below the standard of the rest of the album but there has to be some tracks like that. They hit high on the soaring "Alright" as well. Pilate should be very happy with Caught By The Window. While there are indeed Radiohead and Coldplay comparisons, they do show that there are elements that make them stand out on their own.
