I thought I would catch up on my very first Pixies album on the eve before their reunion show. It went like this: I walked into K-Mart in my small hometown when I was just starting college. I saw this killer cover of an album from a band I had never heard of. On a whim, I picked it up and never really looked back. I know for most Pixies fans it was university or college that brought the Pixies to them but for me it was indeed a self-discovery that I am still proud of today. I can't tell you how excited (reservedly albeit) about the reunion show hitting Calgary on April 18, 2004. Anyway, the music on Bossanova is really incredible and still at the time of it's release nothing was even close to the brilliance of the band. Kim Deal didn't contribute quite as much as she did previously due to her Breeders project but Black Francis' songwriting really shines on here. Listen to "Veloria", "Is She Weird" or "Stormy Weather" again for the first time and think that it was almost 15 years ago when these songs were penned and recorded-simply amazing. Sure there are a couple weak songs like "Ana" or "Down To The Wall" but overall Bossanova is pretty much just as strong an album as Doolittle, their coveted classic. I think it has a lot to do with Gil Norton's echoey reverb production that, although the album is fairly sunny, it still evokes a spooky and spacey vibe. I think the band threw their fans for a loop when they opened their Doolittle follow-up with a cover, The Surftones "Cecilia Ann", even though they did a killer job with it.
