LAL is a great new Canadian project from two like minded artists in Ontaria. Rosina Kazi and Nick Murray (Murr) shared an apartment and came to discover that they both had a knack for creating some very inventive music. LAL released their debut Corners on Public Transit in 2002 and this year marks the awaited follow-up. Their music is very beat oriented in a Morcheeba or Massive Attack sort of vein but they easily incorporate a worldly feel to a number of tracks. Rosina is a vocalist that deserves to be heard with all her soulful singing. Listen to the smooth "Musty City" for a great example of Rosina's potential as a vocalist. There are political overtones but you pretty much let LAL walk all over you with their seductive beats. They incorporate middle eastern beats and sounds as well as a bit of bossa nova in the form of "Shallow Water". Warm Belly Power is a great album and should appeal to fans of world music crossover albums as well as downtempo styles.
