I'm not familiar with Jim Byrnes work so I had absolutely no expectations walking into Fresh Horses. When Jim starts out the album with a laugh and "Ok, I have everyone on board?" you really don't know what to expect but "Bs Blues" is one of the smoothest blues tracks I have heard. Then he showcases his band's ability on the title track instrumental. It has some smoking playing on it. The expertise of Jesse Zubot's fiddle playing and Steve Dawson's amazing guitar work really add some depth to Fresh Horses that probably wouldn't exist otherwise. Byrnes has a great voice for this type of music. It's a little gravelly but consistent. He reminds me a little of John Hiatt. The album is a mix of originals as well as a few well selected covers like Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied" and an amazing version of Neil Young's "For The Turnstiles" as well as a couple others. Jim is a very talented musician that fits the blues very nicely. His band is professional and brings added value to the final record. Fresh Horses should appeal to most blues fans.
