Lock and Key is a new hardcore/post-punk outfit that shows a lot of promise with this EP. The guys in the band rip through 7 songs in just over 20 minutes, some tracks really shining bright like the opening "Independence Game". Basically the sound that Lock and Key achieve is that of a melodic hardcore band such as Hot Water Heat. We get chunky guitars wrapped around great heavy melodies and Ryan Shanahan's vocals are a perfect fit for the songs. Some may want to lump these guys into the emo category but that would be doing them a disservice. This music is melodic but it weighs a ton. The guitar riffs grow on you with every listen. I'm sure that No Fate isn't going to end up being a definitive album but it is a strong one that fans of the genre should seek out. I can hardly wait for a full-length from Lock and Key.
