Korn - Take A Look In The Mirror
What the hell is going on here? Why am I reviewing a Korn album? Don't they see enough press? Well, I have to let the cat out of the bag on this one. I am a longtime Korn fan. There, I got it off my chest and I feel a lot better about it. Back in my retail days I was given a disc of a band I had never even heard of from the Sony rep who visited our record store on a weekly basis. It was they debut Korn album and I totally ate it up and never really looked back. Sure, Korn have had some rotten albums in the past like the not-so-hot Life Is Peachy but I throw it out to you that you should take some time out for Korn once again. Take A Look In The Mirror is arguably their best album to date. They knew that their sound was getting a little stale so when Jonathan Davis and his crew of misfits headed into the studios they agreed on one thing, Mirror had to be different. I totally feel that they have achieved this by easing up on the sheer heavy intensity and integrate some dynamics. Basically they have moved a little more into the Deftones school of thought but still maintain Korn's heavy bottom end. Listen to "Everything I've Known" for a great example of the way they accomplish this. It's still a heavy song but it could almost be considered accessible. While it may not be the first time a metal artist has utilized a hip hop artist on a track but on "Play Me" Nas contributes some amazingly fast vocals that, at first, seem awkward but then a fit takes place. If you have never loved Korn, this album may not be for you but if you have given up on them, take Mirror out for a spin. I think you will be pleased with the results.
