Now, More Than Ever is Canadian Jim Guthrie's third album but it happens to be the first that I was exposed to. In three albums released on his own Three Gut Records he has become quite mature in his songwriting. The album opens with "Problem With Solutions" that has quite an intricate banjo and guitar line that interweave with each other. That is just a start at what Guthrie has up his sleeve for this album. His voice reminds me of Fountains of Wayne. The songs are not near as poppy as his US counterpart but vocally he does sound like Adam Schlesinger. I found that by the time I got to the end I needed more of Guthrie. His music is charming and intelligent at the same time. It's quieter music but not as quiet as, say, Iron and Wine. The instrumental title track is very inspired and forces the listener to realize that Guthrie is much more than a lyric man. There are some darker moments like "Save It" but that just seems like Jim's nature. Now, More Than Ever really marks a high for a talented Canadian singer/songwriter.
