Look at that cover. That's a great looking piece of cover art. And the music contained pretty much stands up to the beautiful cover. This has a lot to do with the collaboration between Jim Lauderdale and Grateful Dead's Robert Hunter. Jim had always dreamed of songwriting with Hunter. Hunter took on the lyrics and poured his heart and soul into them. Now, it's not like Jim isn't a great songwriter but Hunter just seems to have knocked Jim into another world completely. And the musicianship is awesome as well. How can you go wrong with the help of Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brian, Gillian Welch, Buddy Miller, Bryan Sutton, Allison Moorer, and Darrell Scott? The album opens with the soft waltz called "High Timberline" with the unmistakable voice of Emmylou. He then heads over to "Looking Elsewhere", a true country croonfest. Then he really gets truckin' on "Sandy Ford (Barbara Lee)" with some fine musicianship taking the front seat, on through the night. The producer, Tim Coats deserves a nod of the hat as well. Everything just seems to come through in perfect doses. It seems that Lauderdale has found a good home in Dualtone records and that we should be seeing many more fine albums from this talented songwriter who is finally getting the credit he deserves.
