This is a bit of an indie superstar album including members from The Bad Plus, 12 Rods, Happy Apple and Love-cars. James Diers takes on the gentle vocal duties of Halloween, Alaska and does a fine job. The music that is contained within is gentle and yet very lush in delivery. I would recommend, before sitting down with this album, headphones, a darkened room, a favorite beverage and your favorite easychair. This album doesn't really require a lot of attention but you can't help fading back to it every once and a while. The music is so intertwined that tracks like the more upbeat "The Four Corners" demands you to pay full attention. The album is only 8 songs long but the average song length is about 5-6 minutes long. The band is able to mix electronics and organic instruments with ease, not making anything sound forced. One of the more "electro" songs is "State Trooper" that reminds me a little of Postal Service. The rest of the songs are too laid back to get that comparison. The album starts out with the mellow "You're it", giving the listener a very good idea of what lays ahead. And obviously someone's listening to them because the track "Des Moines" was featured on the Fox television show The O.C.. I don't think that Halloween, Alaska has what it takes to be a huge hit but I do feel that they will become cult classics. Their music has class and goes down easy.
