Last time I checked in with Fivehead I wasn't all that impressed. That was back in 2001 with their Big Mistake Factory EP. If that indeed was their Big Mistake, let's move forward to Guests Of The Nation, an album that is miles ahead of their last. This is a band that has matured nicely as you will hear as soon as the second track hits your ears. It's a track called "Can't Sleep" that starts out fairly gently in a Sebadoh sort of way then builds on top. I still hear a lot of Dinosaur Jr. in the band but in a more updated way. The music is a little sloppy but it's meant to be. The production is a little rough around the edges but again, it's supposed to be. Tracks like "Goodie The Rat" are catchy and showcase the trade-off vocals of Beaty and John. I always like more than one vocalist in a band. It adds a dimension that a single vocalist could never achieve. Guests of the Nation brings us back to mid-90s indie rock and reminds us that there was more to the 90s than grunge. I think Fivehead will gain some new fans with this able album. It's one of those albums that people will look curiously at and dismiss but for those lucky few who might actually listen to it, they will have found a new favorite band.
