Ativin has quietly been putting albums out for almost a decade. So quietly, in fact, that I had never heard of them before Night Mute. You can be on top of some of the music some of the time but not all music at all times. Anyway, my oversight aside, Ativin creates some fairly impressive, albeit a little uninspired post-rock music along the lines of what Slint laid down so many years ago. I wasn't surprised to find out that previous Ativin albums had been produced by Steve Albini. There are more vocals on this album than I would have assumed. They are very subdued and low in the mix putting the focus on the creative guitar riffs. While a lot of their music is in minor keys, they do have some moments where melody takes precedence. I have to admit, Ativin was able to instill a sleep-like state over me so don't listen to Night Mute while driving or operating heavy machinery. If you are a fan of some of the darker post-rock then this album will interest you. If not, I would probably sidestep this album and keep looking.
