I missed out on the Kicks debut album but that's OK because Hello Hong Kong does a great job of introducing you to this power-pop band. This four-piece band has been around for a few years but have failed to make an impression on the buying public. This albums has some pretty big pop hooks but for some reason The Kicks failed to leave an impression. Tracks like "Pop Star Radio Crown" have every thing that it takes to become a summer radio hit. It's fun and guitars are huge. The album starts off with the big sounds of "Radar", promising a lot. They mellow out right away with "What Do I Have To Do", which feels like a mistake. The momentum ends up a little lost here. They make an attempt with the pop gem "Satellite" and almost get there. I think the fact that Hello Hong Kong is so freaking polished that the talent somewhat gets lost in the transfer. They really have big potential but I think that The Kicks will just have to actually ease up on the sheen and make their hooks even hookier. This is backwards to what most bands issues are, having to work out production kinks.
