Upwards is quite a bold statement when this is only Ty's second full-length album. Ty is the London-based hip hop artist that has captured many hearts in the underground rap world. With Upwards, Ty has taken on most roles, including long-time collaborator, Drew Horley. This time around Ty has many things that he wants to get out in the open, both political and personal. He is quite a gentle rapper with songs that creep into your mind rather than being shoved in. The grooves that he bases his rhymes are amazingly smooth and easily listenable. The album starts off with "Ha Ha", a track with a thick keyboard sample leading the way. You can't help but nodding your head along. The action really gets moving on "Wait A Minute" with a really cool guitar sample and some of the funkiest rapping heard from England. This music is some that will appeal to a lot of people but probably not everyone. Ty is about the rhythm and flow, he leaves big issues to other artists. The album leaves us with the spoken word advice "Music 2 Fly 2" in which Ty tells us that we're never supposed to win so win everything. I know they are labelmates but I think Ty and Roots Manuva really have to go head to head to see who is the premier rapper in the UK.
