The Dischord band Black Eyes impressed me so much with their debut album that I threw it on my best of 2003 list. With that being said, I was totally excited when I saw Cough cross my desk. Either I have totally the wrong album in my stereo or the band has changed or something has gone completely wrong because Cough is a totally mediocre album that really has me down. I don't know if it was Ian MacKaye or someone in the band that decided the saxophone would be a good idea. This album starts out with "Cough, Cough", a complete waste of time that doesn't even play with rhythm that much. "Eternal Positive" is where the horn really gets annoying and leaves me wondering who these guys are. It isn't until "False Positive" where my interest actually comes back. "Drums" is a clever song too but the annoying saxophone is weaving in and out like a bad Ornette Coleman solo. "Fathers of Daughters" forges a new genre that I will be the first to dub Free Punk, with nods to free jazz. "Scrapes and Scratches" brings it back a little, but not that much. "Holy of Holies" is fairly good too. I can totally see that Black Eyes are trying to create some new music, something that hasn't been heard before, which they have succeeded on. I'm just not sure how many people will fully enjoy Cough. I could be completely wrong but when someone finds the Black Eyes that created their debut album let me know. I'll check in again and please, loose the horns.
