Holy shit! Stop the presses! Tangiers have actually delivered the sophomore album of dreams. Hot New Spirits was a favorite of mine for a long time and I was a little nervous about their follow-up but they have far exceeded my expectations. They are more than Canada's answer to the Strokes. Shit, they kick the Strokes ass no problem! You will see some new faces in Tangiers, this time around. Ex-GBV Jon McCann takes over the drumset, while original member Shelton Deverell returns to the fold. It's like Tangiers took a step back and rethought the process to make some catchy indie rock. I hear a lot of Television this time around and a little less Stooges. It is still a little rough around the edges but Josh and James trading off vocal duties it adds a dimension that they didn't have on their debut. Songs like the opener "Love Rackers" evoke a classic style of bands such as Television and the dB's. Sure, they might still fit into the garage band genre but that really doesn't say enough of how catchy these songs are. The songs have a classic feel and yet fit in so easily to today's rock scene. They have lost their edge but in favor of killer melody and catchy guitar riffs. Vocals are amazing and the whole package is better than anything I've heard along this line. Run, don't walk, to your nearest indie store and ask for Tangiers. You will not be disappointed.
